THE PROBLEM WASNT BURNOUT OR MY LOVE FOR OUR CRAFT. IT WAS NOT MY TOOLS. IT WAS SHARPENING SERVICES DISTROYING MY HAIRCUTTING SHEARS.
In 2018 my shear sharpener sold his business, retired moved out of state.
My whole career after 22 years shifted. Where do I sharpen my shears?
Try the new business owner, why not? I had no idea sharpening was not by hand and on-site mobile in my salon. I gasped when I saw what looked like sandpaper and a wheel! My heart sank!
After that experience, on a quest for a new shear sharpener cold hone. I began to find myself overwhelmed at the idea of learning to sharpen my own shears, or finding a proper sharpener.
I began to find myself "preserving" my last few favorite sharpened shears and focused more on colors and chemical straightening. Eventually, I did not even enjoy cutting hair. I became a Barber, after 22+ years as a Cosmetologist, wondering why if I did not enjoy cutting hair anymore.
Every sharpening became more disappointing, so I began to buy shears instead of sharpening. I knew a cold whetstone hone by hand was the reason my Yasaka shears lasted almost 20 years.
Like a miracle in 2024, I remembered that my first shear purchase in 1996 YASAKA 5" Shear had an envelope to the recommended sharpener! I called to see if they were still in business 30 years later. They were! I sent them my most damaged sharpened shear plus 2 others to fix.
I was absolutely blessed to have received the gift of my shears like new again. Each of my shears has been restored. Cutting shears and texturizing shears sharpened. Finally honed just right by hand every time.
WIth lost desire to cut hair, to restored love of cutting hair, AN EDGE BEYOND WAS BORN.
